For 60 years, NSF-supported graduate research fellows (GRFs) have made outstanding contributions to science and engineering and to the nation. As part of the celebration of this anniversary, NSF sponsored the "GRFP: Creating the Future" Video Competition. Current GRFs were asked to submit 90-second videos showing how their research can help shape the future for them as individuals, for their fields of work, and for the world.
Sixty-three GRFs from 45 institutions across the country responded with highly competitive videos that were reviewed and scored by 19 judges. The judges included NSF staff as well as professional videographers, film producers, science writers and former GRFs. In addition, almost 2,000 individuals cast their votes for the People's Choice Award. The video entries were creative and thoughtful, and reflected the fellows' enthusiasm about their work and the future.
As we celebrate the past 60 years of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program, these videos give us an exciting glimpse into the future this new generation of fellows will create. Adjacent are the 3 winning videos, as well as videos from a few of our finalists:
